Anti-Aging Hormone Replacement
A comprehensive anti-aging program should include bio-identical hormone replacement. Aging is the gradual decline of hormone production. Hormones are a type of neurotransmitter. Neurotransmitters facilitate communication between cells. Think of them as road signs. Over the years, they become weathered, worn, damaged, some are missing, many are hard to read, making it difficult to get where you’re going.
Supplementing with bio-identicals is like replacing the old signs with new ones. Your body is no longer able to produce hormones in optimal amounts so we supplement from an outside source to maintain health and function. It is ideal to supplement as many as possible because all hormones decline with age. Lab testing can be helpful to see which hormones are at sub-optimal levels.
Many replacements are available over the counter such as pregnenolone, melatonin, DHEA. Many are prescription such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, thyroid, and the ultimate anti-aging hormone human growth hormone. All of these and more have multiple functions in the body which is why we feel it so profoundly when even one is off kilter.
When we supplement for anti-aging purposes we want to add enough to reach optimal levels which means the levels typical for a 25 year old. The theory is that this will help to avoid the diseases of old age. Taken in physiological doses hormone replacement is not harmful even when taking “steroids” (a very misunderstood term). There are hundreds of steroids found in plants, animals and humans. Cholesterol, estrogen, testosterone and cortisol to name a few found in humans. Certain people have abused anabolic steroids by taking much more than the body would ever naturally produce. Physiological doses are the amounts that your body naturally produces.
There are some herbs and supplements that can enhance hormone production and facilitate optimal utilization, but at some point you can’t get blood out of a stone, the body is just not able to produce enough anymore, the glands are worn out. The Ayervedic herb Ashwaganda is a good example of an herb that can help overall function and well being because it actually contains thyroid hormones and has been used for millennia for it’s restorative benefits.
